About the job

Salary: £537.31 per week
Hours per week: various

Please note, you will not be eligible for this role if you have children living in the household who are under 16 years of age.

The aim of the scheme is to offer time limited family based care to young people who have complex and very challenging needs.

Before you can begin on the scheme, you will be asked to undertake an assessment and become approved as a Foster Carer.  If successful, you will be approved to look after a young person for a contracted period.

Carers receive ongoing supervision from a fostering social worker and from the young person’s social worker.  We are looking for people who will be able to support and manage many of the challenges that these young people face. You will need to demonstrate direct experience of supporting and engaging with young people and advocating on their behalf.

The scheme needs people who are highly motivated, self reliant, practical, and who have an understanding of the challenges faced by some of the young people in Local Authority care.

Carers provide 24 hour care and support for a young person, as well as practical help like transport etc.

In return, carers receive a fee of £537.31 a week, as well as the appropriate Boarding out allowance for the young person of £157 or £237 a week depending on the young person’s age.

The fee is taxable, and Carers need to take responsibility for managing their tax status and returns. You will be a Foster Carer, not an employee of Luton Borough Council.

About you

The type of young person eligible for this service will vary; therefore, each contract will vary in scope. Most of the young people are likely to have been involved in drugs or alcohol abuse, offending or have behavioural and educational difficulties.  They are however, first and foremost, young people who may also be victims and have indicated that they wish to live within a family setting.

Your completed application form will be used to assess your suitability at this stage.  If you have the skills and experience we are looking for, we will contact you to initiate the assessment process. This will include answering any of your questions or concerns you may have.  If we are unable to proceed with your application, we will also discuss this with you.

Please think hard about whether you have the appropriate skills and experience to become a contract carer; and whether your circumstances are right to enable this commitment.

If you feel that this scheme is not for you, there may be other types of foster care you could undertake.  Please indicate on your application form if you would be interested in hearing about them.
